UK car makers hail best January for eight years

Vehicle, Car makers built 137,552 vehicles last month - SantanderCB

New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show UK car makers built 137,552 vehicles last month, an 8% increase on the same four weeks in 2015 and the best January numbers since 2008. Demand from abroad helped to boost sales, with exports rising 9.7% on January 2015 to 106,441. Domestic sales climbed 2.5% to 31,111. The impressive figures follow what was a strong 2015 for the British automotive industry, and SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes expects heavy investment will see output continue to grow in the coming years, although he is wary of global economic turbulence, political conditions and consumer confidence.
