Tech-savvy shoppers splash out on gadgets
Data from property group Hammerson has reported a 0.4% increase in sales across its shopping centres last month. There was a rise of almost 28% in purchases of 'sound, picture and technology' gadgets, the biggest like-for-like increase in nine months.
The positive Retail Tracker for April also showed a 27% surge in holiday bookings, particularly to long-haul destinations.
The data contrasts with the British Retail Consortium's announcement that April saw the sharpest drop in sales in eight months, a decline of 0.9%, and it expects trading to remain tough as consumers focus their spending on events and experiences rather than items.
However, Office for National Statistics figures showed a 4.3% rise year on year during the month.
