Strong sales growth for hotels, restaurants and bars

Consumers continued to flock to hotels, restaurants and bars last month, with the industry achieving its best sales growth in years. Overall spending was up by 2.2% in February on a year-on-year basis, after a 2.5% increase in January, according to Visa Europe. The best performers were hotels, restaurants and bars, which rose by 13.6%, and recreation and culture, which was up 9.7%. Annabel Fiddes, an economist at Markit, said: 'Consumers continue to benefit from record low interest rates, subdued price trends and relatively low unemployment.'
