Solar finally eclipses coal-fired power
Solar power provided more energy to British homes and businesses than coal-fired power stations last weekend.
Solar generated 29GWh of power on Saturday, or 4% of national demand, versus 21GWh from coal-fired stations, according to analysis of National Grid data by Carbon Brief.
'This first for solar power reflects the major shifts going on in the electricity system. Last weekend's solar breakthrough could not have happened without the increase in solar capacity. However, an ongoing collapse in coal generation was the more immediate cause,' Carbon Brief said.
