School holiday season boosts retail figures at mall operator

The start of the school holiday season helped drive a sharp rise in retail sales in July, according to Hammerson, one of Britain's biggest shopping centre owners. The company, which owns the Bullring in Birmingham and Brent Cross shopping centre in north London, launched the Hammerson Retail Tracker earlier this year to monitor consumer spending trends. Its latest tracker shows sales rose by 2.9% in the four weeks to 18 July, with the last seven days particularly strong as sales were up 5.4%. Hammerson highlighted a 20.8% rise in sales of toys and games, with retro collections such as Star Wars memorabilia and My Little Pony among the best sellers.
