Santander hails the 'success story' of UK food manufacturing

Santander has hailed food and drink manufacturing as a 'major UK success story' despite a survey finding that almost a fifth of respondents thought British food was unpopular abroad. According to a report from the bank, manufacturers in the sector increased by 6% last year to 8,225 firms, making it one of the UK's most successful industries. But despite this achievement, a third of people still believe the sector is struggling and 18% see UK food as being unpopular overseas. Mark Collings, Santander head of international SME banking, commented: 'British people are proud of their local produce and certainly miss their favourite tea, chocolate, meat and cheese when travelling abroad, yet many do not realise quite how popular these items have become beyond our shores.' The industry remains Britain's biggest manufacturing sector, with a turnover of £95bn, and exports reached £12.8bn last year according to the Food and Drink Federation. Santander believes UK businesses are in a strong position to capitalise on this momentum, especially in terms of global potential and export opportunities. Ireland is the UK's biggest export market, followed by France, Holland, Germany and the US.
