Retail sales surge as shoppers bag pre-Christmas bargains

Retail sales rose more strongly than expected in November figures from the ONS show, with the amount spent across the retail industry increasing by 1.7% on the month and 5% on the year. This contrasted with predictions of lacklustre sales by industry surveys and indicates a rise in discretionary spending by British consumers who have benefited from rising wages and falling prices. Average store prices fell by 3.3% last month compared with November 2014 in what was the 17th consecutive month of year-on-year falls. Online sales rose by 12.7% this November compared with November 2014 and by 4.9% compared with October 2015.
