As I outlined in our last issue, last year was particularly challenging for business, as well as for the banking industry as a whole. Yet as we come to the end of the first month of 2013, I think we should approach the coming year with confidence. I am extremely proud of the way our customers tackled many of the issues they faced head-on and I strongly feel this reflects a generally positive attitude towards what the future could hold. I am also pleased that Santander Corporate & Commercial continues to strengthen its offering to customers, with a great range of solutions and services available through our expanding UK network of relationship teams – and we have recently been working to enhance our range of current and deposit accounts. For this issue of Business Up Close, we spoke to Tony Hseih – a young and extremely successful US-based entrepreneur – who puts ‘happiness’ at the top of his list of business priorities. This is an inspirational approach focused around people, both employees and customers. It represents what I feel will be fundamental to growing a successful business in 2013 and onwards – as a way of differentiating your company from its competitors, but also forming the basis for lasting and meaningful relationships with those you conduct business with (and those who work for you).
