Leicester has promising future in 'successful' East Midlands region

Sunday Times economics editor David Smith has said that Leicester is well-placed within the 'successful' East Midlands region. 'The economy in the East Midlands is more diversified than most regions of the UK,' he explained. 'There's a strong, active labour market and a projection from the Purchasing Managers' Index shows that of all the regions in the UK, the East Midlands will be the third strongest behind London and the South East.' Smith was speaking at the inaugural Leicester Mercury Business Summit, attended by nearly 150 members of Leicestershire's business community. The event is part of the two-week Leicester Business Festival which runs until November 6. Monday saw the official festival launch breakfast at Curve, along with an economic forecast for SMEs by Barry Naisbitt, chief economist at Santander UK.
