Jump in sales fuels hope for growth figures

Figures published this week will confirm that the UK economy grew 0.5% in the third quarter as hopes rise that there has been a sharp rise in the last quarter. Strong retail sales last week indicated a pick-up from the third quarter, suggesting that 2015 growth is likely to have been about 2.4% overall. Howard Archer, chief UK economist at IHS Global Insight, said he had forecast GDP growth of 0.6% quarter-on-quarter in the fourth quarter, but the retail sales figures suggest it could be higher.
