Graham McKean on the funding needs of the health and social care sector

Healthcare - Challenge that lie ahead in the health and social care sector - SantanderCB

Graham McKean, Head of SME Healthcare at Santander Corporate & Commercial, writes in Yorkshire Business Insider about the challenges that lie ahead for the health and social care sector. He explains that a variety of investors are providing the capital for residential care businesses to grow organically and by acquisitions, and banks such as Santander are 'open to do business' in the sector. But social care operators face some very real headwinds in the form of pressure on revenues, rising salary costs and tighter regulation. 'As these become more intense, care providers will require not just funding, but 'smart' funding from providers who fully understand the sector,' he says. McKean stresses that Santander is well positioned as a lender which understands the industry. 'With a lending book exceeding £2bn we have deep roots in the healthcare sector as a whole, and the care home sector and care industry in particular,' he explains. 'Our commitment to the industry was recently recognised by HealthInvestor as Bank or Lender of the Year Award 2015.'
