Global vision for South West food and drink

Wine bottle - Food and drink businesses in the South West - SantanderCB

Food and drink businesses in the South West have been urged to collaborate and seek out opportunities to export if the industry is to build on its recent growth. An SME summit staged by Santander at Sandy Park in Exeter brought together businesses and sector leaders who debated the challenges facing food and drink producers and manufacturers. The event showcased regional success stories such as Cornish Sea Salt, which has found new markets in Scandinavia, America and the Far East. In a keynote address Michael Caines, executive chef at Gidleigh Park, explained how businesses in the region can capitalise on the South West brand, especially overseas. Caines recently opened his first restaurant outside the UK – Pearls by Michael Caines in Abu Dhabi – and is now working on plans for a luxury hotel and restaurant at Lympstone in the UK. 'Sell your story and where you come from, and share your passion for the landscape,' he told business owners in the audience. David Bird, South West regional director at Santander Corporate & Commercial, said: 'Within the UK, the South West is synonymous with excellent quality food and drink, from local ales to dairy, pasties and seafood. At Santander we want to help the businesses involved really capitalise on brand South West.'
