Gin-aissance leads to boom in distilleries
Research from accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young has revealed that 28 new gin distilleries opened across England in 2015 on the back of increasing demand for boutique spirits, increasing the total number by a third. Across the UK, 56 artisan distilleries opened last year.
Gin sales in 2015 were just shy of £1bn, with the tipple proving particularly popular among younger drinkers.
A large amount of British gin and vodka is exported around the world, primarily to the US, and its upsurge in popularity follows that of the UK's craft beer industry.
A study by UHY Hacker Young released in March found 36 breweries had opened in 2015, up from 29 in 2014.
