Father and son partnership wins top farming award

Tractor - Northern Farmer awards ceremony - SantanderCB

Innovative farmers were celebrated during the third annual Northern Farmer Awards ceremony. Beef farmers Mike and Tom Powley were crowned 2016 Northern Farmers of the Year, sponsored by the event's principal supporter Mole Country Stores. The father and son duo began working Elm House Farm in Green Hammerton, near York, with 12 Hereford cross dairy cows in 1987, but their quest for success has seen their operation expand to earn them recognition as leading beef farmers. The judges were impressed by their focus and determination to get the best performance from their stock. However, John Reed and family received the biggest round of applause of the night when they won the Sheep Farmer of the Year Award, sponsored by Santander Corporate and Commercial, for their work at Lands Farm in Bishop Auckland.
