Early Easter lifts sales of groceries

Shopping - Improving customer sentiment has helped UK supermarkets - SantanderCB

An early Easter and improving consumer sentiment has helped UK supermarkets record the fastest sales growth in a year. Data indicated that in the 12 weeks to March 27, sales grew by 1.1% against the same period in 2015. First among the supermarkets was the Co-operative which recorded a 3.9% rise in sales, in what was its fastest rate since its acquisition of Somerfield in 2011. This means it has managed to increase its market share by 0.1% to 6.1%. Kantar Worldpanel said that the small increase in shoppers at Tesco and a further slowing in the rate of sales declines, meant the grocer could return to growth within months. However, it said that as a result of shop closures, Tesco's market share fell by 0.3% to 28.1%. Wm Morrison's market share also fell, by 0.4% to 10.5%, because of closures. The German discounters continued to expand at a rapid pace. Lidl retained its place as the fastest-growing supermarket with sales increasing by 17.7% to capture 4.4%of the market. Aldi lifted sales by 14.4% to take a record market share of 6%.
