Confident manufacturers say exports are on the up

Manufacturing

A poll of 2,300 exporting businesses, conducted by the British Chambers of Commerce and DHL Express, has found that 58% expect their profitability to increase over the next 12 months, while 66% are confident about improving turnover. The positive outlook comes despite a debilitating exchange rate and continuing political turmoil in the eurozone and Ukraine. A third of exporters reported an increase in export sales in the final three months of 2014, and four out of five exporters tried to recruit staff at the end of last year. A separate survey of more than 500 SMEs, conducted by the Manufacturing Advisory Service, found that 50% were looking to recruit, while 54% were planning to invest in technology, the highest figure recorded in the six-year history of the study.
