Handshakes, Companies 'are in best shape for two years - SantanderCB

Analysis by the Share Centre has indicated that companies have reported their fastest growth for two years, although supermarkets and the oil and gas industries weighed heavily on performance. Consumers bought new homes and booked holidays, boosting airlines, travel companies, housebuilders and estate agents. Overall, operating profits were up 5.5% to £10.1bn in the final quarter. Smaller companies outperformed the FTSE 100, which the Share Club attributed to a domestic focus which shelters them from global instability. The mid-cap groups reported operating profits up 11.9%, almost four times the 3.6% rise shown by the FTSE 100 constituents. Overall, revenues rose 0.4% to £108.3 billion during the period.
