Electronics, Retail sales jump by 2.4% within a month - SantanderCB

The new year began with a consumer splurge on electronics, furniture and home accessories in the January sales. Retail sales jumped by 2.4% compared with the same month a year earlier, beating analysts' expectations, according to the Office for National Statistics. The ONS said the amount spent by shoppers in January was £26.6bn, a 2.3% increase on sales in December on a seasonally adjusted basis. The pick-up in homewares and furniture was boosted by the strong and rising housing market. Average prices fell 2.6%, so the volume of goods bought rose 5.2%.
