Brighter June as clothes, food and toy sales rise

The latest British Retail Consortium and KPMG Retail Sales Monitor reveals that retail sales were up 1.8% in June compared with a year earlier when sales fell 0.8%. The like-for-like increase in June is the best rise in 18 months, excluding Easter distortions. June's retail figures were boosted by rises in sales of outdoor toys and equipment thanks to the hot weather. Fashion sales also benefited from warm weather. Food sales rose for the seventh month in a row. The BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor also forecast that measures unveiled in last week's Budget are likely to boost consumer confidence.
