Biggest rise in housebuilding since 2007

The National House Building Council reported that 40,281 new homes were registered between January and March - the highest total for the first quarter since early 2007. The figures also represented an 18% increase compared with the first three months of 2014. Eastern England had a 70% upswing in new registrations, while Northern Ireland had a 42% increase. In the south-east new registrations grew by 47% year-on-year in the first quarter. However, new registrations in London were down by 29% year-on-year to 5,622 new homes. The NHBC's chief executive Mike Quinton said housing growth levels remained strong across virtually every part of the UK, but warned that the UK is still building way below the volumes of homes needed.
