£180m hi-tech zone is given green light

Tecnology - 'A zone of excellence' to support new and growing businesses - SantanderCB

A science and hi-tech Enterprise Zone was given the green light by Chancellor George Osborne in his Budget statement. Up to 25,000 jobs could be created and £180m generated at the new site, which stretches from Leicester to Loughborough. The benefits will come over the next 25 years through the creation of a 'zone of excellence' to support new and growing businesses to bring their innovative ideas and products to market. Building on Leicestershire's excellent reputation in research, innovation and product development at Loughborough, Leicester and De Montfort universities, the EZ will seek to capitalise on the huge commercial market that lies between research and the commercial world. Nick Pulley, chairman of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, said: 'Confirmation of this new Enterprise Zone will make Leicestershire extremely attractive to science, innovation and hi-tech manufacturing companies looking for research facilities and industrial and office space to base and expand their businesses.'
