Protecting yourself Online
We have put together the following best practice guide to help keep you safe when managing your accounts online.

- lets you know if you’re using the bank’s genuine website and not a fake one, which can be difficult to spot;
- provides a secure connection between your computer and the bank;
- identifies malware and neutralises it.

Always install an anti-virus application and apply regular updates from the provider. Make sure you perform regular scans to detect and remove any viruses, Trojans and other malicious software from your machines and business network. Your IT department or a reputable IT software provider can offer further advice on purchasing and using a good anti-virus application.

If you ever get a suspicious email, forward it to email@example.com and delete it from your mailbox. Never open any links or follow any instructions in the email. If you think you may have revealed your details, call us immediately on 0800 085 1580.
Beware of these emails, as they may also contain viruses and malicious software (malware). Malware is usually distributed by unsolicited emails containing links or attachments, but you could also receive it through attachments in emails you may be expecting.
- Choose User Access. Only designated users within your business have access to Santander Connect and their access can be tailored to meet responsibilities within your business. Where appropriate, only allocate payment permissions to certain users which offers more safety if credentials were compromised by a fraudster.
- Use dual authorisation where possible to authenticate your payments: With dual authorisation, two separate people are needed when authenticating payments online for your business. Typically, the first person creates and authenticates the payment request, and a second user authenticates it before we send the payment. Your administrator user can set up and manage this feature under the ‘Administration’ menu.
- User authorisation limits. Limits can be placed on each user to control the maximum value of a payment that can be authorised, this offers another barrier to a fraudster if credentials were compromised. We recommend that every user has an authorisation limit applied.
- Company payment limits. Within Santander Connect, an overall maximum value payment limit can be applied, which applies to all users irrespectively of their own authorisation limit. For your security this is defaulted to £10,000 in Santander Connect. This can be amended by your administrator.
- Regular review of users accessing service: Your administrator for Santander Connect should regularly review all users registered on the service for your business and remove any inactive users to reduce the risk of their credentials being compromised.
- Make sure all users are keeping their information up to date: It’s important that all Santander Connect users of keep their details up to date, particularly their email and contact numbers, so we can contact you about your account/transcations.
Make sure your web browser is up to date and apply regular updates from the provider. Mainstream web browsers (e.g. Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari) have integral security features that can detect threats such as fake websites. Consult your IT department or a reputable IT software provider to make sure you’re using the latest version of your chosen web browser.
Never leave your computer unattended while connected to any site you are using, especially when banking online. Always ensure you log out properly from our Online Banking service by selecting the ‘Log off’ button and then confirming you wish to log off – this ensures your online connection to the bank is dropped.
This can prevent potential intruders from accessing your computer network within your business. Most operating systems have integral firewalls that manage your web traffic and provide an effective barrier between your computer and unwanted activity from the internet. Consult your IT department or a reputable IT supplier to ensure your firewall is configured correctly.
If you use a wireless connection to access the internet, you must ensure it is protected to avoid anyone interfering with your connection. Typically most Wi-Fi connections have suitable protection with a minimum of WPA2 encryption, but you should also make sure it’s password protected.
It is a good idea to regularly delete browsing history and clear your cache. Cache (temporary internet files and data) store web pages you have visited in your computers memory.
Choosing a strong password is essential to protecting your information and accounts online. Here are some key tips for making strong passwords:
- The most secure passwords have more than 7 characters and use a mixture of letters, numbers and other characters
- Avoid using the same passwords across different web sites and services that you access regularly
- Don’t use names, birthdays or dictionary words – these can be guessed and determined more easily by fraudsters
- Letters from a song or lyric can help add uniqueness and are easy for you to remember, for example; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star How I Wonder What You Are, gives TTLSHIWWYA which is very difficult to crack
- Change your passwords regularly
- Always keep passwords safe - never write a password down or share it with anyone else
- Remember – we or any other reputable financial institution, government organisation or police will never ask you to verify full password information
